Researchers indicate, following a study published in The New England Journal of Medicine, that nearly 18 percent of patients sustain injuries as a result of medical errors committed by health care professionals. Many of these injuries prove fatal.

The study included ten North Carolina hospitals between 2002 and 2007. North Carolina was targeted since the state is considered an industry leader when it comes to improving patient safety.
